Sonic Light Speed

Sonic Light Speed is a freeware Sonic Fan Game that I spent roughly two years programming. I’ve created it using version 6.1 of a game design library called Game Maker. Below is some information about the game along with some screenshots and a demo. Enjoy.

Gameplay

Like any other Sonic the Hedgehog Game, the gameplay is pretty fast-paced. The levels are full of loops, ramps, and springs that keep you going fast. All the moves one would expect in a Sonic game are included, such as crouching and spindash. Powerups such as shield, invincible, magnet, and ring are also included. The object of every level is to move quickly towards the goal while picking up rings and avoiding badniks.

Levels

The bulk of the time I’ve spent on this game has been on designing levels. There are five levels. Each is broken down into two different acts. Each act is 13000 pixels long and 2000 pixels wide. I’ve made sure that all the levels include several different paths to the end. This both keeps them from becoming monotonously linear and makes them more replayable. The levels are as follows:

  1. Coconut Canyon The game opens up with this tropically-themed level. Within it are all sorts of gimmicky little obstacles, ranging from rollable balls to exploding coconuts. The tileset I used for this level is the largest of all the levels, so the landscape throughout the level varies widely.
  2. Torrent Terrace The second level of the game is a watery one, complete with waves, badnik fish, and underwater tubes. To complete this level, you’ll need to go underwater many different times. The game’s physics engine includes the ability to handle underwater movement, for which acceleration slows down and maximum speed decreases.
  3. Chaos Construction This third, metropolitan-themed level is even faster-paced than the last two with it’s many loops, springs, and grindrails. Though grindrails appear a few times in the previous levels, they are most numerous in this one. The tileset is from the first level of Sonic Crackers, a canned Sonic the Hedgehog game.
  4. Paranormal Palace The ruined palace landscape of this level is home to an array of wacky challenges ranging from invisible springs to floating platforms. Accompanying all these is, of course, a dangerous bunch of badniks and spike pits.
  5. Jumbled Junction The game closes with this dangerous jumble of platforms, pillars, and loops. The level, being the final level, is difficult, but not ridiculously so. The many deviously placed spikes form some major challenges to overcome, but all are certainly overcomeable.
